Suicide of Sikh woman in US sparks outrage across social media, people demand justice

New Delhi, August 7, 2022: The death of Mandeep Kaur, an Indian-origin who committed suicide Richmond-based residence in New York after experiencing torture from her husband and in-laws has sparked outrage across social media.
This comes after Kaur, who was tortured at the hands of her husband, allegedly committed suicide on August 3 after she posted an online video where she spoke about years of domestic abuse by her husband Ranjotveer Singh Sandhu and it sparked outrage across India and abroad.
The video was posted by The Kaur Movement.
The 30-year-old Indian-origin woman was domestically abused by her husband Ranjotveer Singh Sandhu for close to eight years. Another video also went viral on the net which purportedly showed the victim being beaten up.
She is survived by her two daughters, aged four and six, whose custody currently is with Sandhu.
Meanwhile, on August 5, an FIR was registered at the Najibabad Police Station of Bijnor in UP against Kaur's husband and in-laws under sections 306 (Abetment of suicide), 498-A (Domestic violence), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 342 (Punishment for wrongful confinement) and Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, a police official said.
The FIR was filed by Jaspal Singh, father of Mandeep Kaur wherein he accused Mukhtar Singh, father of Ranjotveer Singh Sandhu, Kuldeep Raj Kaur, mother of Ranjotveer Singh Sandhu, and Jasveer Singh, brother of Ranjotveer Singh Sandhu for the suicide.
A social media user also a Justice Studies student Harjot Kaur Thind urged the netizen to collect information about the abuser who is reportedly so that justice could be served.
"Circulate this as much as possible! These are Mandeep’s in-laws who are now on the run! They think they can escape but karma does not require an address," while posting a screenshot of The Kaur Movement where the latter has urged the public to share any information on the incident with them.
"Parents must make their daughters equal beneficiaries as sons in the family will, no matter how big or small the assets. It instills a sense of worth in the child, nothing less will do. How unfortunate that patriachy has made this basic right a privilege for many," another Preet Kaur Sandhu, another social media user.
"MandeepKaur committed SU!CIDE after 8yrs of torture from her alcoholic,unfaithful husband who cursed her for giving birth to 2 daughters & wanted more dowry These abuses among NRIs are quite common & women are ALONE in a foreign land," Pallavi, a Twitter user commented.
