Eshana Bhangu with Punjabi roots elected as member of UBC Board of Governor

Vancouver (Canada), March 23, 2023: Punjabi family-born Eshana Bhangu has been elected to serve as a member of the UBC Board of Governors for the upcoming year where she will be one of only twenty-one members of UBC’s highest governing body, overseeing all operations, finances, and the academic mission of a top-forty research institution and leading university in the country
Eshana Bhangu is a fourth-year student studying International Relations at UBC Vancouver currently serving as the President of the AMS( Alma Matter Society) and Senator at Large( consequently for the third year), the highest academic governing body.
Born in California, Eshana had her primary education at Strawberry Fields World School Chandigarh till age 9 when she moved to Canada.
While at Southridge School, she acquired skills that she wanted to use to give back to the community. And after graduating High School, she got accepted in the prestigious UBC.
During her undergraduate degree, Eshana spent two years on the Executive of the Alma Mater Society (AMS of UBC), the largest student union in the country, as VP of Academic and University Affairs and the President.
During this time, Eshana has led efforts to ensure safety during Covid-19, millions of dollars towards financial aid for domestic and international students, secured over $1.8 million towards food insecurity reliefs at UBC and managed the AMS’s annual budget of $30 million.
As the Chief spokesperson of the AMS and chief representative of all 60,000+ UBC students, Eshana has served on the Search Committees for multiple members of the UBC Executive, including the Provost & VP Academic, VP Finance and Operations, and now as part of the search for UBC’s next Vice-Chancellor and President.
Eshana has served as a Senator on the UBC Vancouver Senate for three years, during which she also served as Vice-Chair of the Senate, Chair of the Budget Committee, and a member of several committees, including the Academic Policy Committee overseeing UBC’s Academic Calendar, regulations, and policies.
