Lahore [Pakistan], February 26, 2024: Maryam Nawaz, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) nominee, has made history by becoming Punjab's first female chief minister.
Born on 28 October 1973, Maryam Nawaz is the daughter of former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif.
She attended the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Lahore, where she studied from pre-nursery to tenth grade. She later earned her Faculty of Science program at Lahore College for Women. She earned a master's degree in literature from the University of Punjab after completing her undergraduate studies there.
Maryam who was initially involved in philanthropic works carried out by the family entered politics politics in 2012.
Being appointed as the election incharge, she led the PML-N to victory in the 2013 Pakistan elections after being elected president of the party.
In the same year, she was appointed the Chairperson of the Prime Minister's Youth Programme. However, she resigned in 2014 when her appointment was challenged in the Lahore High Court.
Maryam was named to the BBC's 100 Women list in March 2017, which recognizes influential women from around the world, particularly as her country's first daughter.
In December 2017, she also appeared on The New York Times list of 11 Powerful Women Around the World for the year 2017.
In 2024, Pakistan General Election, she was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan (NA) and the Provincial Assembly of Punjab for the first time, making her parliamentary debut.
