Over 370 dead due to rain and flood in Afghanistan

Kabul, May 19, 2024: More than 370 people have died and 1600 people have been injured due to heavy rains in Afghanistan for three weeks. According to Taliban officials, the worst damage occurred in Ghor province. 60 people died due to floods here on Saturday. Considering the seriousness of the situation, the Taliban government has sent the air force to help the people.
Taliban spokesperson Maulvi Abdul said that many people are still missing in the area. Due to the bad weather, the rescue team is facing a lot of difficulty in helping the injured. More than 6,000 houses have been washed away so far across Afghanistan, including Badakhshan, Ghor, Baghlan and Herat.
The World Food Program (WFP) reported on May 12 that flash floods have devastated Afghanistan. More than 300 people have died in Baghlan alone. More than 100 people are still missing there.
According to the American news channel CNN, thousands of houses, thousands of hectares of arable land and hundreds of cattle have been washed away in different districts due to floods in Afghanistan.
According to the International Rescue Committee (IRC), there is a state of emergency in most of the provinces of Afghanistan. Several teams are involved in relief operations.
More than 4 thousand houses have been damaged in Firoz-Koh city. About 2 thousand shops and 2 thousand houses have been washed away. Apart from this, more than 300 animals have died.
According to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), they are working closely with the government of Afghanistan. UNDP has contacted several international NGOs to deliver relief materials.
UNDP has built more than 300 temporary houses so far. Many areas have been without electricity for the past 3 weeks. Last month too, more than 70 people died due to heavy rains in Afghanistan. Experts have attributed the rain to climate change.
