US proposes barring airlines from charging family seating fees
Babushahi Bureau
Washington DC (US), August 2, 2024: the Biden Administration has proposed a new regulation that would outlaw airlines from charging families more to sit next to one another.
As officials put pressure on airlines to voluntarily not charge them, the Biden administration announced in February 2023 that it planned to write regulations prohibiting the fees.
President Joe Biden signed legislation passed by Congress in May that outlawed the practice.
"Many airlines still don't guarantee family seating, which means parents wonder if they'll have to pay extra just to be seated with their young child. Flying with children is already complicated enough without having to worry about that," said US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg as quoted by Business Insider.
