Across Borders: Pakistan-based Foundation pays tribute to Dulla Bhatti, on his 426th martyrdom anniversary
Ferozepur (Lahore), January 13, 2025: The Pakistan-based Shaheed Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation, led by Chairman Imtiaz Rasheed Qureshi, observed the 426th martyrdom anniversary of Punjab’s legendary folk hero, Dulla Bhatti, often called the ‘Robin Hood of Punjab.’ on the Lohri festival today. Accompanied by Senior Vice Chairman Malik Ehtisham Ul Hasan and Additional Secretary Dr Shahid Naseer, Qureshi paid homage to Dulla Bhatti (1547-1599) at his grave in Lahore’s historic Miani Sahib graveyard.
Floral tributes and prayers were offered, and traditional Lohri songs, including the iconic "Sundar Mundariye," were sung in reverence. Speaking on the occasion, Qureshi highlighted Dulla Bhatti's legacy as a protector of honour and a fearless rebel against Mughal oppression. "Dulla Bhatti’s bravery and defiance against the Mughals make him a timeless hero. The Lohri festival celebrated worldwide is a tribute to his memory and values," he remarked.
Dulla Bhatti is remembered in Punjabi folklore for rescuing young girls from exploitation during the Mughal era and arranging their marriages. His rebellion against Emperor Akbar remains a symbol of courage. Despite his ultimate execution on March 26, 1589, at Milad Chowk, Delhi Darwaza in Lahore, his legacy endures in folk traditions and history.
Qureshi called for greater recognition of Dulla Bhatti's contributions, urging the Pakistan government to include his story in educational curricula, issue commemorative stamps and coins in his honour, and build a fitting memorial at his gravesite.
“Dulla Bhatti’s story is one of unparalleled bravery and cultural significance,” Qureshi emphasized. “As a Muslim landlord who championed the rights of women and the poor, he transcended religious and societal boundaries, symbolizing unity and resistance.”
The Foundation reiterated its demand for steps to preserve and celebrate the legacy of Dulla Bhatti, ensuring that future generations are inspired by his courage and values.
