Chicago, June 12, 2020: A team of surgeons led by Ankit Bharat, a doctor of Indian origin, carried out successful double lung transplant at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago, on Thursday, the first of its kind surgery since the coronavirus pandemic began, which gave a new lease of life to a woman in her 20s whose lungs were severely damaged by coronavirus.
The woman, who was on lung and heart-support for two months, is now recovering after the operation.
Bharat, who is the director of the hospital’s lung transplant operations, said lung transplants may become common for patients of severe forms of coronavirus.
Coronavirus mainly affects the respiratory system but it can also damage heart, blood vessels and kidneys.
