Ferozepur's progressive farmer makes significant contribution in saving environment
Ferozepur, November 2, 2020: The district administration is encouraging the farmers to merge the paddy crop residues with the soil before sowing instead of putting it to fire, to pollute the environment or pass it on to the power generating units through the baler machines. In this context, a progressive farmer and an educationist of village Nurpur Sethan, known as the best village of India, is making a significant contribution in saving the environment by not putting on fire the crop residue during the paddy season rather mixing it with the soil for making the base for wheat sowing.
Progressive Farmer Harcharan Singh said that this year the farmers of the district have made a large number of paddy straw bales from the crop residue them from the fields. He said he himself has made straw bales in an area of about 40 acres and his joint family has also proved to be an environmentalist by making bales of paddy straw in about 150 acres without setting fire to it.
He said that most of the farmers have prepared the land for sowing with balers without putting on fire the stubble and by doing so they have not only provided employment to many people and families but has also contributed for creating a cleaner environment. By doing so, it will increase the fertility of our soil and will not destroy the friendly insects in the soil.
Harcharan Singh said that by burning the stubble, the smoke out of it, not only pollute the environment but also cause many road accidents taking the lives of many. He however, asked the Punjab government to take coordinated steps that go beyond preaching to stop the farmers from burning crop stubble and releasing harmful pollutants into the atmosphere. If the farmers still refuse to make use of available alternatives to crop burning, penalties should kick in.
