DC appeals to farmers to avoid burning stubble

Ferozepur, May 4, 2024: On Saturday, the Deputy Commissioner appealed to farmers not to burn stubble or crop residue in the fields as it has an adverse impact on the environment.
DC said that during the current season of wheat in the district, the work of purchasing, lifting and payment of wheat is going on very smoothly and the farmers are not facing any problem in the markets. In Ferozepur, 8,06,992 MTs of wheat have been purchased in the district till last evening and payments of Rs.1805.34 crore were paid to the farmers in exchange for the purchase of wheat in their accounts.
Appealing to the farmers to avoid crop burning, DC said, “By burning crop residue, you take away the rights of the animals who do not get their share of fodder due to stubble burning. This practice also kills the friendly bacteria and fungi present in the soil. Stubble burning damages not only the environment but also the fertility of the soil. Given stubble burning incidents, still, there is a need to create awareness on this issue”.
He said that they should not burn their crop residue and mix it in the soil using modern tools so that the environment remains clean and the fertility of the land is maintained. He said that the farmers must contact the Agriculture Department to get modern tools or other information regarding the preservation of the grain of wheat.
DC said that so far 97.88 per cent of the wheat that has reached the markets has been purchased and the lifting work is also going on at a war level. He said that till yesterday evening, 2,34,949 MTs by PUNGRAIN, 2,07,119 MTs by Markfed, 2,21,626 metric tons by PUNSUP, 1,22,908 by Punjab State Warehousing Corporation, out of the total purchase of wheat in the purchase centres of the district and traders have purchased 20, 389 MT of wheat.
