'Statistics assume great significance in policy making for all sections'
S.A.S. Nagar, June 29, 2020: The World Statistics Day was today celebrated via Video Conferencing to earmark the birthday of Late Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis.
The objective of the day is to create public awareness, especially among the younger generation about the role of Statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation. The theme for the Statistics Day 2020 is “Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Health for all)and 5(Gender equality)”.
Due to covid-19 pandemic this year Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation
organized this programme at NITI Aayog and Regional Offices of National Statistical Office (NSO) were connected with the help of web link to enable their virtual participation. Regional Office, Mohali has been represented by Shri Rajneesh Mathur, Deputy Director General.
In the inaugural address Mr. Praveen Srivastava, Chief Statistician of India and Secretary, Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation, highlighted the importance of SDGs and briefed on the future action plans & introduction of new methods in data collection.
On this occasion Rao Inderjeet Singh, the Honourable Minister of Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation also gave an insight about achievements and future action plan of the Ministry
The programme was virtually attended by Vivek Debroy,Chairman, ISI Council, Prof. Bimal Kumar Roy, Chairman, National Statistical Council & Dr Sanghamitra Bandopdhyaya, Director,Indian Statistical Institute where they shared their views on the theme .
