Fight gets closer in Gujarat, BJP leads in 79 seats, Congress in 77
Gandhinagar, Dec 18, 2017: An hour into the counting of votes, the early lead that BJP got over Congress has almost become neck and neck.
NDTV reported BJP leading in 79 seats and Congress chasing it closely overall with lead in 77 seats.
"We are going to form a government in Gujarat. People have voted for us on development issues," BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain told the media.
It is being predicted that the BJP would form the government but with lesser majority as compared to 2012. The party is trailing in 19 seats won by it in previous election.
It is cheers for Congress which is leading in 22 more seats than in 2012.
It was the first Assembly election in Gujarat since Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister in 2014.
Modi had led the BJP to victory in the election in 2012.( with agency inputs)
