Ludhiana, August 2, 2022: The Skill Development Centre, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organized a two-day training course on the “Use of Drip, Sprinkler Irrigation and Poly Houses” for in-service candidates under the guidance of Dr Ashok Kumar, Director of Extension Education.
A total of 20 Soil Conservation, Horticulture and Agriculture Officers; scientists from PAU and its Krishi Vigyan Kendras attended the course.
Dr Kuldeep Singh, Associate Director (Skill Development), shared that with the globalization of markets, shrinking land and climate change, protected cultivation has emerged as the single most important technology for ensuring high productivity, improved quality and profitable returns. Further he said that poly house cultivation is helpful to produce off-season vegetable crops.
Dr Kiran Grover, Principal Extension Scientist (Food and Nutrition) and Dr Kulvir Kaur, Assistant Professor, Directorate of Extension Education, while coordinating the course, highlighted that production of safe and nutritious food is much desired and required to meet the growing demand and ensure food security for all.
The protected cultivation practices have major role to play in ensuring the sustainability of natural resources and in combating the climate change and to produce residual/chemical free produces under poly house conditions.
Dr Rakesh Sharda, Principal Extension Scientist (Soil and Water Engineering) and Technical Coordinator, emphasized on Solar photo voltaic system as energy efficient system.
Dr Mukesh Siag, an agricultural engineering expert, discussed different options of drip irrigation layout, especially, in horticulture crops.Dr Sanjay Tukaram Satpute and Dr Sudhir Thaman, Scientists, explained the use of sprinkler irrigation as a resource conservation technology along with the ways to improve water use efficiency.
Dr Nilesh Biwalkar, an expert of Soil and Water Engineering and Technical Coordinator, talked about the use of drip irrigation for judicious use of available water, and crop water requirements under the present scenario of climate change. He discussed various methods of irrigation water scheduling under field conditions.
Dr Gurbir Kaur explained the use of fertigation in micro irrigation systems for protected cultivation.
Later, Dr Grover proposed a vote of thanks and stated that productivity can further be enhanced through the adoption and utilization of more efficient existent technologies and practices.
