Chandigarh, January 27, 2023: Chandigarh ranks amongst the cities with the highest number of vehicles per head in India, which has resulted in traffic jams and high pollution levels during the last ten years. With a mission to decongest the Chandigarh roads, Chandigarh Welfare Trust has submitted an innovative and environment-friendly solution to this problem.
The research team of Chandigarh Welfare Trust has come up with Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) System which will provide an alternate public transport system to the residents of Chandigarh. Satnam Singh Sandhu, Founder of Chandigarh Welfare Trust and Chancellor of Chandigarh University, submitted a proposal of Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) to Dharam Pal Singh (IAS), UT Advisor, in the presence of Banwari Lal Purohit, Governor of Punjab and UT Administrator, today at Raj Bhawan.
As a member of UT Advisory Council, Satnam Singh Sandhu is also the Chairman of the UT Standing Committee on Environment.
While giving details about the proposed Mass Rapid Transit System, Satnam Singh Sandhu said, “We have proposed to transform N-Choe which is a seasonal stream that passes through various sectors originating from Civil Secretariat. The N-Choe pass through Sector 2, Sector 10, Sector 16, Sector 23, Sector 26, Sector 42, and Sector 53 with a total length of 13.4 km.”
We propose to build electric tram which will run through the passage of N-Choe and offer a mass rapid transit system for the daily commuters of Chandigarh city, he added.
“The proposed electric tram project will help in decongesting the city roads and will also help in reducing the pollution levels caused by the vehicular traffic,” said Satnam Singh Sandhu.
UT Administrator and Governor of Punjab has shown keen interest in the project and has asked the UT Administration to form a committee along with the members from Chandigarh Welfare Trust to study the project in details and submit a final project report.
“Our team of researchers at Chandigarh Welfare Trust have conducted a detailed research on converting the N-Choe into a Mass Rapid Transit System as currently the N-Choe has become a dumping ground for garbage which is spreading stink to the environment and, is currently non-functional. There are more than 4 to 5 lakh daily commuters entering Chandigarh as a result there are huge traffic jams on various roads coming from other parts of Tricity,” Sandhu said.
“MRTS will solve both the problems of utilizing the N-Choe which is causing environment pollution while it will also offer an alternative public transportation to such commuters. And in addition, it has the potential to become a tourist attraction of the city,” he said.
