Beat plastic pollution: PAU to students

Ludhiana, June 6, 2023: Making a global call to beat plastic pollution, the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE) Chapter, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana celebrated World Environment Day with the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”.
The event witnessed the participation of a diverse gathering of students, experts, and environmental enthusiasts to discuss the detrimental effects of plastic on ecosystems and explore sustainable alternatives.
Dr HS Sidhu, Dean, of the College of Agricultural Engineering and Technology, stated that plastic pollution was a global crisis that demanded immediate attention.
He added that this day was celebrated world over to raise awareness, promote sustainable practices, and inspire behavioral change by reducing reliance on single-use plastics, embracing recycling, and supporting eco-friendly alternatives.
Dr. JP Singh, the Chairman, impressed upon the role of students in maintaining a clean and green campus by educating others to keep a healthy living environment by plantation of trees and reducing the use of plastic.
An insightful session by guest speaker Dr Sarabjeet Singh, Professor, Department of Agricultural Journalism, Languages and Culture, highlighted the gravity of the plastic pollution crisis.
He addressed alarming statistics and shared case studies illustrating the detrimental impact of plastic waste on human health and landfills.
Furthermore, Dr. Urmila Gupta, Principal Scientist (REE), encouraged all to curb plastic pollution by utilizing waste plastic bottles for bio enzyme production from various organic wastes for domestic use.
Dr Sunil Garg, Secretary-cum-Treasurer, ISTE, informed that poster and model making competition; poem, song and talk on environment conservation by the student were also organized on this occasion. Certificates were given to the winners and participants.
Dr Manpreet Singh, Faculty Advisor, Student’s Chapter, ISTE, PAU proposed a vote of thanks.
