Centre issues clarification amid row over proposed bill concerning Chandigarh; Watch Video

Chandigarh, November 23, 2025: The Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday issued a formal clarification stating that the proposal concerning the Central Government’s law-making process for the Union Territory of Chandigarh is still under examination and that no final decision has been taken.
According to the ministry, the proposal is aimed solely at simplifying the Central Government’s legislative process for Chandigarh and does not seek to alter the UT’s governance or administrative structure.

It further emphasized that the proposal does not intend to change the traditional arrangements between Chandigarh and the states of Punjab or Haryana.
The Home Ministry assured that any decision on the matter will be taken only after extensive consultations with all stakeholders, keeping in view the interests of Chandigarh and its residents.
The statement also dismissed speculation about a legislative move, asserting that the Central Government has no intention of introducing any such Bill in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament.
The Ministry stressed that there is no need for concern, reiterating that Chandigarh’s current arrangements remain unchanged.
