Chandigarh, November 11, 2025 — Tension escalated at Panjab University (PU) on Monday as Chandigarh Police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse protesting students and supporters gathered under the ongoing “PU Bachao Morcha.”
The protest, which coincided with the ongoing Senate elections, turned chaotic when large groups of students, farmers, and members of various organisations marched towards Gate No. 1 of the university. Despite repeated appeals from senior police officials, including the SSP, the demonstrators refused to retreat, leading to scuffles and eventually a baton charge.
Eyewitnesses said the protesters, including some Nihang groups, broke through barricades and entered the campus. Police reinforcements were rushed in as clashes spread to adjoining areas.

Earlier in the day, Chandigarh Police sealed city borders and entry points from Mohali, Zirakpur, and New Chandigarh, setting up barricades and halting vehicle movement to prevent supporters from reaching the university. The restrictions caused significant inconvenience to commuters.
The Panjab University administration had already announced a holiday on November 10 and 11 following overnight gatherings by students and activists on campus.
Slogans of “Mithi dhun rabab di – Punjab University Punjab di” echoed across the protest site as students vowed to continue their agitation to “save PU” and protect its autonomy.
Clashes between police and students reportedly continued through the afternoon, with security tightened across the campus and nearby areas.
