Cloudburst triggers widespread devastation in Uttarkashi; over 200 missing

Uttarkashi (Uttarakhand), August 6, 2025 – A devastating cloudburst in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand has caused widespread destruction, with reports of over 200 people missing.The Indian Army has confirmed that nine of its personnel are also among those unaccounted for.
The twin cloudbursts struck the Dharali and Sukhi Top regions, with Dharali village facing the brunt of the disaster. Shocking visuals from the affected areas show homes, shops, markets, and roads being swept away by powerful water currents.
Search and rescue operations are being carried out on a war footing. Over 130 people have been rescued so far, according to officials.
Teams from the Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are engaged in relentless rescue efforts, despite continued rainfall and harsh weather conditions hampering operations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are in constant contact with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and are closely monitoring the situation.
Authorities have urged residents to stay alert and follow safety protocols as further heavy rainfall is expected in the region.
