Panjab University Senate elections to be held in September–October 2026; Vice-President gives approval
Chandigarh, November 27, 2025:
Panjab University, Chandigarh has received formal approval from the Vice-President of India, who is also the Chancellor of the university, for holding elections to the new Senate for a four-year term beginning 2026.
According to the proposal cleared by the Chancellor, ordinary fellows will be elected from multiple constituencies, including registered graduates, professors, associate and assistant professors of university teaching departments, principals and staff of technical and professional colleges, heads and teachers of affiliated arts colleges, and representatives of various faculties. A total of 15 seats have been earmarked for registered graduates, while 2 seats each will be filled from university professors and associate/assistant professors on the teaching departments’ staff. Further seats have been notified for principals and staff of technical and professional colleges, heads and teachers of affiliated arts colleges, and six representatives from different faculties of the university.
The schedule proposes that elections for principals and staff of technical and professional colleges be held on September 7, 2026, followed by polling for professors and then associate/assistant professors of university teaching departments on September 14, 2026. Elections for heads of affiliated arts colleges, as well as professors and associate/assistant professors of affiliated arts colleges, along with registered graduates, are slated for September 20, 2026. Faculty-wise elections on the campus are scheduled for October 4, 2026, with scrutiny and counting fixed for dates immediately following each polling day.
In a communication issued from the Vice-President’s Secretariat to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig, the Under Secretary conveyed that the Chancellor has approved the proposed schedule of Senate elections as forwarded by the university. The approval clears the way for Panjab University to proceed with the detailed election process for reconstituting its top statutory body.
