Sangrur (Punjab), October 6, 2025: Sohan Singh Dhillon, a progressive farmer from Rampura Gujran village in Andana block, Sangrur district, has been honored with the prestigious National Mushroom Producer Award by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Mushroom Research Centre, Solan, during the National Mushroom Fair. The award recognizes his exceptional achievements and enterprise in mushroom cultivation.
Dr. Mandeep Singh, In-Charge of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Sangrur, congratulated Dhillon, saying, “By excelling in mushroom cultivation and achieving self-reliance, Sohan Singh has become a beacon of inspiration for the youth of the district.”
After completing his postgraduate studies, Dhillon underwent training at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, and the Mushroom Research Centre, Solan. Starting with a single shed in 2018, he has expanded his operations to 15–20 sheds, producing approximately 1,000 quintals of mushrooms annually at his Dhillon Mushroom Farm.
To overcome cultivation challenges, Dhillon maintains close contact with experts from PAU and the Mushroom Research Centre, Solan. He has also provided employment to 25–30 people at his farm, cultivating both seasonal and off-season mushrooms. During summer, he grows button mushrooms in four air-conditioned rooms, each with a capacity of 3,000 bags. A dedicated composting unit ensures high-quality production.
Dr. Mandeep Singh noted that Dhillon’s achievement highlights not only his dedication but also the potential of mushroom cultivation as a sustainable and profitable venture for farmers in the region.
