Rupnagar 05 August 2020: On the occasion of the 150thbirth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the Government of India had decided to conduct 150lectures/symposia in 150 reputed foreign Universities jointly with reputed Indian institutions/Universities. The purpose of this exercise is to allow Gandhian thoughts and philosophy to be widely disseminated in the intellectual circles.
In view of this, IIT Ropar has joined hands with its partner university The State University of New York, Binghamton(SUNY) to conduct an online lecture on the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. The lecture is planned on 11th August, 2020 at 5 pm IST (7.30 am EST). The lecture will focus on the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and their relevance in contemporary times. It would also focus on the views of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and his learnings about satyagraha and ahimsa.
This online lecture aims at sensitizing young minds around the world on different aspects of the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. The lecture would begin with a presentation by Prof Sarit K Das, Director, IIT Ropar followed by Prof Harvey G Stenger, President, SUNY-Binghamton. Thereafter, Prof Bijoy Baruah from the Department of HSS at IIT Ropar would talk about the Relevance of Mahatma Gandhi's teachings in the present times. Provost Donald G Nieman from SUNY will talk on the common vision shared by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi. Finally, Prof. K. Srihari, Executive Vice Provost for International Education and Global Affairs at SUNY would give his closing thoughts. There will be wide ranging discussions on how youngsters can have a global outreach through Gandhiji’s teachings.
