Burning ‘angithi’ suffocates three to death
Ferozepur, January 18, 2021: Three members of a family including 5-year-old boy were choked to death after they allegedly inhaled toxic fumes from an 'angithi' in their room in village Hamadwala Uttar in Ferozepur district.
The family had slept while keeping a coal ‘angithi’ burning to beat the cold at night. The room got filled with poisonous gases. The deceased have been identified as Rajvir Kaur, 35, wife of Jagjit Singh, grandsons Sahilpreet Singh, 12 and Ekampreet Singh, 5.
As per the information, all three fell asleep watching television around 9 pm with 'angithi' in the room. When the daughter-in-law did not come out in the morning to offer tea, the room was broken open and all the three were found dead.
The incident was reported to the village sarpanch and police station Mallanwala. Inderjit Singh Zira former Minister of Punjab, Ranjit Singh SDM and DSP Zira Rajwinder Singh also reached at the house of incident to share grief with the deceased family members. Later the bodies were sent for postmortem. Later, the cause of death was revealed as hypoxemia. Since they were feeling cold, they had lit 'angithi' in their room before they went to sleep, police said.
Expressing deep concern over the incident, Inderjit Singh Zira said, the Punjab government will extend all possible help to the family.
