Chandigarh administration all set to tackle monsoon problems

As monsoon is likely to reach Chandigarh in the first week of July, UT Adviser Dharam Pal on Wednesday reviewed the preparedness in the city in order to avoid flooding of roads and to maintain the regular supply of the Electricity during the monsoon period.
In this regard, the preventive preparedness has already been done by the Chandigarh Administration and Municipal Corporation. The road gullies along major roads falling under the jurisdiction of the Engineering Department, Chandigarh Administration, such as Uttar Marg, Madhya Marg, Dakshin Marg, Purv Marg, Jan Marg and National Highways covering about 5000 road gullies have been cleaned to maintain a regular flow of water during the monsoon period. MCC has already cleaned 85% of all the road gullies in the city and shall clean the remaining within 10 days. Also, 18 teams to control flood/water logging throughout city have been constituted.
The duties of the officials by the Chandigarh Administration have been assigned at the regulator end of Sukhna Lake on a 24x7 basis to regularly monitor the water level of the Sukhna Lake during the rainy season, so as to ensure that there is no damage to Government property due to flow from the catchment area into Sukhna Lake.
The Control Room has also been established to monitor the discharge of the lake at the regulator end and to coordinate with the concerned DCs of Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula to have proper communication during the opening of flood gates in case of excess discharge from Sukhna Lake during the monsoon period.
Dharam Pal directed the concerned officials to regularly monitor the situation and inspect every site so that no unforeseen situation causes inconvenience to the public.
The MC Commissioner Mrs Anindita Mitra stated that the target date to complete the annual cleaning work of road gullies in various sectors/rehabilitation colonies/villages is of 7th July 2022 and in order to meet the target date and owing to Monsoon, more labour has been deployed to complete the work by 7th July 2022.
She further informed that a total of 18 teams comprising one SDE and JEs have been constituted to remain active in the field during the rainy season. Two Control Centre at Water Filling Station Sector 15, Chandigarh with telephone number: 0172-2540200 and 2nd in Manimajra (Water Works-II, MHC) with telephone no. 0172-2738082 have also been made operational round the clock in three shifts along with telephone attendants where residents can lodge the complaints of water logging during rain. Additionally, four-team of workers will be deployed on night duty w.e.f. 01.07.2022 to handle the problem of water stagnation.
The required pruning of trees falling along 33/11KV distribution lines has been done by the Engineering Department of Chandigarh Administration. The department has also established the Citizen Fecilitation Centre (CFC) having Ph.No.0172-4639999 to attend the public complaints regarding water logging, felling of trees and electricity complaints in case of any emergency during monsoon season.
The Adviser has asked the teams to keep a track of these issues so that no inconvenience is caused to any resident.
All team leaders will arrange required labour for the removal of the blockage in stormwater drainage during the period of rain other than during dry day time from the concerned Executive Engineers and the team will also work under the supervision of divisional officers. Sub Divisional Engineers of Road Wing of the concerned area and MOH Wing will also move in their areas the sufficient labour to get any blockage removed at any point of Road due to depression/grass on berms or any other reason in the areas under their jurisdiction respectively. The overall in charge will be Executive Engineer, Public Health Division No.4, Chandigarh. The teams will be operative w.e.f. 01.07.2022 to 30.09.2022.
