Pioneer of Government Medical College, Patiala passes away
Patiala, December 7, 2023:
Dr Gurdev Singh,98 a former professor of pharmacology and one of the founding members of Government Medical College, Patiala passed away on Dec 1. A Pivotal moment arose when in 195I the then government decided to establish medical college at Patiala and gave a free hand to him and two other doctors to establish it. He played significant role in establishment of the department of pharmacology dedicating his life to teaching at medical College Patiala and also played significant role in establishing pharmacology department at Dayanand medical college in Ludhiana where he was on deputation.
Born in Sangrur to a family with limited resources, Dr Gurdev Singh embarked on a journey that left an indelible mark on the medical community . In 1946, against all odds, he secured a place in medical school in Lahore, becoming the first from his province to achieve such a feat. Following the partition, his dedication led him to medical College Amritsar, where he completed his medical degree .
Beyond his professional achievements, was the simplicity and humility he maintained in his personal life. He lived by the principles of honesty, integrity, and compassion, presenting himself as a true saint. Riding a bicycle to work, he embodied the humility he wished to instill in his children and students - a lesson he demonstrated giving a ride on the backseat carrier to principal of the medical college Amritsar Dr Mohinder Singh Grewal .
Regardless of his accomplishments, he remained grounded, teaching us that success should never compromise the simplicity of life.
His impact extended far beyond the academic sphere. Students sought his guidance, knowing that Dr. Gurdev Singh would always lend a helping hand. His life exemplified simplicity, honesty, and an unwavering dedication to serving humanity.
His legacy lives on not only in the knowledge he shared but in the values he instilled - a life of contentment, honesty, and service to others. His commitment to helping the poor and his belief in leading a simple life were unwavering. He never chased after wealth but found fulfillment in living within his means, leaving a profound impact on everyone who crossed his path.
The bhog and last prayers for peace of departed soul were held today at Guru Teg Bahadur Gurdwara 23 number Phatak at Patiala. He was maternal uncle ( Mama Ji ) of Veternary officer Gurinder Singh Walia.
