SVEEP Senior Citizen Meet held to celebrate democracy and honouring senior voters
Senior citizens to get priority during voting at polling booths
Guruharsahai (Ferozepur), April 15, 2024: Today, a significant event unfolded at the Government Girls Senior Secondary School in Guruharshahai, as the Senior Citizen Voters Forum convened a special gathering under the banner of the Systematic Voters' Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) initiative. Under the direction of District Election Officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Dhiman, this meeting, led by SDM Gagandeep Singh and attended by esteemed district officials and community leaders, marked a pivotal moment in voter awareness, particularly targeting the senior citizen demographic.
The focus of the event was clear to infuse enthusiasm, deep contemplation, and a heightened sense of responsibility among senior citizens towards the electoral process. The guidelines set by the Election Commission, championed by SDM Gagandeep Singh and supported by Tehsildar Election, Chand Parkash, Dr Satinder Singh Coordinator, Kewal Krishan Supdt and Gagandeep Election Kanungo underscored the mission to enhance voter participation while upholding the democratic heritage through the active involvement of seniors.
During his address, Assistant Returning Officer-cum-SDM Guruharshai, Gagandeep Singh announced a significant initiative for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections-2024. Senior citizens, a cornerstone of democratic participation, will receive preferential treatment at polling booths on June 1. This includes facilitating voting for seniors aged 85 and above at home, providing wheelchair access, and e-rickshaw services for those in remote areas.
The event also served as a platform for addressing challenges in the polling process, with a commitment from officials to find viable solutions. Notable figures such as President of the Pension Association Ravi Sharma, Retired Welfare Officer Shinder Pal Kapahi, and others expressed satisfaction with the proposed measures, pledging their support to ensure maximum voter turnout for the sake of democracy's pride.
Principal Karan Singh Dhaliwal, SVEEP Coordinator Parvinder Singh Lalchian, and SVEEP Academic Expert Surinder Kamboj lauded the initiative, recognizing its alignment with the spirit of the Baisakhi festival and the impending Lok Sabha Elections-2024. The presence of key dignitaries from the Election Voting Registration Team and SVEEP Team further underscored the collaborative effort to empower democracy through informed and engaged senior citizens.
