Chandigarh, May 2, 2025 –Following a nearly two-hour-long all-party meeting on Punjab’s water crisis, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann addressed the media in the presence of leaders from all major opposition parties.
The meeting concluded with a rare display of political unity, as leaders set aside partisan differences to stand together on the issue of Punjab’s river waters.
Speaking to the press, CM Mann stated that all parties unanimously agreed that Punjab is in no position to release even a drop of water to Haryana, which has demanded 8,500 cusecs.
“There is complete consensus. Everyone rose above politics and stood united. I am extremely happy about this,” Mann said.
The Chief Minister added that the meeting also included discussions on Punjab’s representation in the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) and the Chandigarh issue.

Several leaders suggested seeking an appointment with the Prime Minister to present Punjab’s stand, and CM Mann assured that all suggestions would be considered.
“We will take a final decision in the special session of the Vidhan Sabha on Monday. Any water quota to Haryana will only be discussed after May 20. If Punjab had surplus water, we would not hesitate to share, but we simply don’t have it,” said Mann.
Shiromani Akali Dal leader Balwinder Singh Bhunder echoed the sentiment, saying, “We are all united because this is a matter of Punjab’s survival. There is no room for party politics in this.”
Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar added, “We do not have even a drop to spare. CM Sahib had once given 4,000 cusecs, which no one opposed. But now, any attempt to force Punjab’s hand will be unacceptable. Punjabis do not tolerate coercion.”
The show of unity among political rivals is being seen as a significant step in Punjab’s ongoing struggle to protect its water rights.
