MP Gurjeet Aujla urges PM Modi to declare cross-border drug and arms smuggling as terrorism
Babushahi Bureau | Amritsar, May 12, 2025
After the recent announcement of a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla has written a strongly-worded letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding that cross-border drug and arms smuggling be officially recognized as an act of terrorism.
A Clear Call: Smuggling is Not Just Crime, It is Terrorism
In his letter, MP Aujla highlighted the grave threat posed by the continuous inflow of drugs and illegal weapons into Punjab's border regions, particularly Amritsar. "Drug and arms smuggling from across the border is not merely a crime—it is a deliberate assault on the youth, families, and future of Punjab. It is nothing short of a terrorist act," he wrote.
Devastating Impact on Punjab's Youth
MP Aujla revealed alarming statistics in his letter, stating that over two lakh people have lost their lives in Punjab due to drug abuse, with over 90% of the deceased belonging to the Sikh community. This, he said, exposes the disproportionate impact of the drug menace on the people of Punjab.
“This is not just a crisis—it is a deliberate attack on our society. Families are being destroyed, the youth are being targeted, and the future of our state is under threat,” Aujla asserted.
Smuggling Through Drones: A Security Threat
MP Aujla further emphasized that despite the availability of advanced technology, Pakistan continues to use drones to deliver large quantities of drugs and dangerous weapons into Indian territory. He expressed concern over the growing network of narco-terrorism, which is not only affecting local residents but also putting tourists at risk.
“It is alarming that some officials, bureaucrats, and system insiders may be facilitating these smuggling operations. This calls for an immediate crackdown,” he added.
A Demand, Not Just an Appeal
MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla clarified that his letter to the Prime Minister is not just a request but a clear demand from the people of the border region. He urged the government to:
-
Officially classify cross-border drug and arms smuggling as an act of terrorism.
-
Implement strict measures to secure the borders against such threats.
-
Investigate and take action against any officials involved in aiding smuggling operations.
“Declaring cross-border smuggling as terrorism is not just about labels—it is about acknowledging the scale of the threat and responding with the seriousness it deserves,” Aujla concluded.
This strong appeal from the Amritsar MP has drawn significant attention, with citizens from the border areas hoping for a decisive government response.
