New Delhi, August 5, 2025: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday said that the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal dispute has been turned into a political issue, even though there is no real conflict between Punjab and Haryana.
Speaking after attending a high-level meeting in Delhi with Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, CM Mann said:
“The Supreme Court had suggested that before the next hearing on August 13, both states should try to resolve the SYL matter through discussions. Today’s meeting was held as per that direction. Some positive decisions were taken. Let me make it clear – there is no fight between Punjab and Haryana. This issue has been politicised, and that’s unfortunate.”
Mann emphasized the importance of dialogue over confrontation and hinted that constructive steps were being taken ahead of the Supreme Court's upcoming hearing.
He also stressed that Punjab's water concerns remain central to any agreement.
