KVK holds 5-Day training on Nursery Management for aspiring farmers
Ferozepur, August 8, 2025: A five-day skill-based training program on “Nursery Management in Horticultural Crops” was successfully conducted from August 4 to 8, 2025, by Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Ferozepur, under the guidance of Dr. Gurmel Singh, Deputy Director (Training), KVK Ferozepur, and as per the directives of the Directorate of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. The objective was to promote income-generating subsidiary occupations among farmers.
A total of 27 young farmers, including women from various villages in Ferozepur and Faridkot districts, participated in the training program.
During the training, Dr. Gurmel Singh introduced the participants to the various initiatives and skill-based trainings provided by KVK. He motivated the farmers, especially the youth, to adopt allied agri-enterprises to enhance their income.
Dr. B.S. Sekhon, Assistant Professor (Vegetable Science), provided in-depth knowledge on nursery management techniques in horticultural crops. He discussed key aspects including site selection, identification of quality seeds, seed treatment methods, preparation of nursery beds, seed rate, germination percentage, plant population per acre, seedling production in trays, and pest and disease management.
As part of the hands-on experience, the trainees were taken on a field visit to Dr. J.C. Bakshi Regional Research Station in Abohar. During the visit, scientists shared detailed insights - Dr. Anil Kumar Kamra spoke on recommended varieties and propagation methods for date palm and jamun, Dr. Sandeep Raheja explained pest and disease management in fruit nurseries, Dr. Subhash Ghorela covered recommended varieties and propagation methods for kinnow and guava, and Dr. Prakash Mahla discussed soilless media nursery techniques for vegetables.
Practical demonstrations on grafting and propagation methods were also conducted to enhance hands-on learning.
Renowned progressive farmer and State Awardee, Amarjit Singh Gill from village Bhure Kalan, who has been recognized by Punjab Agricultural University for his excellence in nursery production, interacted with the trainees and shared his extensive experience in nursery management.
The participants showed keen interest throughout the training and engaged in interactive sessions with experts. At the end of the program, an evaluation test was conducted, and 90% of the participants scored over 80%. Most of them expressed their willingness to adopt nursery management as a sustainable agri-enterprise.
