Amritsar (Punjab), August 13, 2025: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has strongly condemned the fatal racial attack on a 70-year-old Sikh man in California, USA.
Calling for strict action against the culprits, he urged the Government of India to ensure the safety of Sikhs living abroad.“This brutal attack on an elderly Sikh in California, leaving him critically injured, is deeply unfortunate,” Dhami said.
“Sikhs hold high positions worldwide and have significantly contributed to the progress of every country they reside in. Such hate-fuelled incidents against Sikhs have sparked outrage among the global Sikh community.”
The horrifying incident took place on August 4 in North Hollywood, California. Seventy-year-old retired mathematics professor Harpal Singh was mercilessly attacked near Lankershim Gurdwara Sahib by an unidentified assailant wielding a golf club.
Singh sustained severe head and facial injuries, including brain bleeding and serious eye damage. Multiple surgeries have been performed, and he remains in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a nearby hospital in critical condition.
The American Sikh Council (ASC) expressed deep concern, suspecting the attack to be a hate crime. Citing FBI data from 2024, the council highlighted that Sikhs are the third most targeted religious community in the United States.
The ASC has demanded a thorough investigation by local police and swift justice for the perpetrator.
