IMD issues orange, red alerts as heavy rain batters Mumbai, Thane, Raigad
Mumbai, August 17, 2025 (ANI): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for Mumbai and Thane districts for August 16–17, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, and a ‘Red Alert’ for Raigad district on August 16.
Several parts of Mumbai and Thane reported waterlogging on Sunday morning, with areas like Mahim severely affected. The rising water level of the Mithi River has added to concerns amid continuous downpours.
The IMD has also issued a flash flood alert for Maharashtra’s Konkan region, including Mumbai. Flash floods are likely in Mumbai City, Suburban Mumbai, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Goa districts.
According to an official release, a moderate to high flash flood risk is expected over fully saturated soils and low-lying areas in the region till 11:30 IST on August 17. Surface runoff and inundation are possible in vulnerable areas.The forecast predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall across Mumbai city and suburbs, accompanied by gusty winds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph.
Over the next seven days, Goa, Maharashtra, and Gujarat are expected to witness widespread heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy falls likely in Konkan, Mumbai, Goa, and the Ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra between August 16–19.
In the last 24 hours (8:00 AM August 16 to 8:00 AM August 17), Mumbai recorded 92.81 mm of rainfall, with the Eastern Suburbs receiving 78.15 mm and Western Suburbs 103.98 mm. On Saturday, Santacruz logged 24 cm, while Colaba recorded 8 cm of rainfall.
