Kabul (Afghanistan), August 20, 2025: More than 70 people were killed and several others injured in a horrific road accident in western Afghanistan on Wednesday. The tragedy occurred when a speeding passenger bus carrying Afghan migrants deported from Iran collided with a truck and a motorcycle in Guzara district, outside Herat city.
According to Herat police, the accident was caused by over-speeding and driver negligence. Provincial official Mohammad Yusuf Saeedi confirmed that most of the victims were bus passengers, while two people on the truck and two on the motorcycle also lost their lives.
Road accidents are frequent in Afghanistan due to dilapidated highways, reckless driving, lack of enforcement of traffic rules, and unsafe, outdated vehicles.
The incident echoes a 2016 tragedy on the Kabul–Kandahar highway in Zabul province, where 73 people were burned alive after a bus-truck collision triggered a massive fire.
