Ludhiana (Punjab), August 29, 2025: With seven districts of Punjab reeling under devastating floods, BJP Punjab Spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal has sounded a grave warning, cautioning that Ludhiana city itself could be submerged if urgent repairs to the Sutlej embankments are not undertaken.
During a visit to Sasrali Colony in Sahnewal constituency, Baliawal highlighted that the Sutlej River is rapidly eroding farmland and weakening embankments from Kasabad to Ghumana.
“The river has already swallowed large tracts of land. If the embankment gives way this time, the responsibility for the disaster will lie squarely on the government and the administration,” he said.
Baliawal recalled that he had alerted authorities as early as August 7 regarding the urgent need to reinforce the embankments. “But negligence has prevailed, and now thousands of acres of farmland are being lost to the floods,” he added.
He further criticized ministers, MLAs, and officials for restricting themselves to “photo opportunities” instead of taking real action on the ground. Stressing the need for immediate reinforcement of the Kasabad–Ghumana embankment and relief measures for flood-hit villages, he demanded special girdawari (crop loss assessment) and compensation for farmers whose land has been damaged.
“This is the time for decisive action, not apathy. The administration must act now to prevent an avoidable catastrophe,” Baliawal urged.
