Sultanpur Lodhi (Kapurthala), August 30, 2025: With water levels rising in the Beas River and floods posing a threat to low-lying areas, the Drainage Department has intensified efforts to fortify the Dhussi embankments in Kapurthala district.
Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal has been receiving hourly updates from the department on the water inflow, while urgent strengthening work is being carried out at vulnerable spots.
Executive Engineer (XEN) Sartaj Singh said the Dhussi embankments in Kapurthala district are fully secure and under no imminent threat. He informed that over the past 10 days, more than 50,000 soil-filled bags have been placed to strengthen sensitive points.
In Bhulath sub-division, work is underway near Mansoorwal and Miani Bhaguparia. SDO Sukhpal Singh, who is supervising the work, said seepage was reported at Miani Bhaguparia due to heavy rainfall, which has been addressed by slope strengthening and placing crates filled with soil bags. Similar measures have been implemented near Mansoorwal.
In Kapurthala sub-division, SDO Khushwinder Singh said reinforcement work is ongoing near Pirewal and Dhaliwal Bet, with crates of soil bags installed at both sites.
In Sultanpur Lodhi tehsil, around 1,200 feet of the Dhussi embankment near Khijarpur has been reinforced with soil-filled crates.
SDO Vijay Kumar, supervising work near Nabipur and Bharoana, informed that wire crates are being installed near Nabipur, while at Bharoana, villagers have joined hands with the department to fill and place soil bags to secure the embankment.
