Chandigarh, October 26, 2025: Aam Aadmi Party MP Malvinder Singh Kang has alleged that Panjab University refused permission to organize a seminar on martyrdom events, sparking controversy over academic freedom and political interference.
In a letter addressed to Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Renu Vig, Kang sought formal permission to hold a seminar dedicated to the remembrance of national martyrs. However, he claimed that the university administration denied the request without valid justification.
Kang said the seminar was planned in response to students’ demand to commemorate martyrdom-related events, but the university authorities allegedly declined approval. He accused the administration of acting under instructions from Delhi, asserting that “VC Renu Vig is following the orders of the central government.”
The MP further alleged that the Centre does not want students to learn about sacrifices and martyrdoms, which, according to him, explains the refusal. “It is unfortunate that a university of such repute is being pressured to suppress discussions on our martyrs’ sacrifices,” Kang said.
