Gurdaspur (Punjab), November 19, 2025: A shocking double murder followed by a suicide rocked Punjab’s Gurdaspur district early Friday morning. An ex-serviceman, identified as Bir Singh, shot dead his wife and mother-in-law over an ongoing family dispute before turning the gun on himself when police cornered him.
The incident took place around 3 AM in Khuthi village under Dorangla Police Station. Bir Singh, who was employed as a security guard with PESCO at the Central Jail in Gurdaspur, allegedly opened fire on his 32-year-old wife, Akvinder Kaur, and 55-year-old mother-in-law, Gurjit Kaur, killing both on the spot.
After committing the murders, he fled to his flat in Scheme No. 7 of the Improvement Trust in Gurdaspur and hid there.
Upon receiving information, SSP Gurdaspur Aditya reached the location with a police team and surrounded the building. Officers repeatedly urged Bir Singh to surrender, but instead, he shot himself in the head with an AK-47 rifle.
Police officials confirmed that marital disputes had been ongoing between Bir Singh and his wife, and a case was also pending in court. Akvinder had been living with her mother due to the conflict.
Authorities are now investigating how Bir Singh obtained the AK-47 rifle—whether it was issued through official channels or acquired illegally.
