Breaking: Charanjit Singh Brar resigns from Shiromani Akali Dal (Punar Surjit)

Chandigarh, January 14, 2026: Amid ongoing internal turmoil within the Shiromani Akali Dal (Resurgent), the party suffered a major setback on Wednesday as its General Secretary and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Brar resigned from all party posts as well as its primary membership. He announced his resignation while addressing state and circle delegates.
Brar said that the same ideological shortcomings due to which he had earlier severed ties with the Badal family were, unfortunately, not being addressed in the newly formed Punar Surjit movement.
He alleged that during the last five months following the election of the party president on August 11, the organisation had failed to fight at the grassroots level on public issues, nor had it provided any concrete programme to its workers.
Writing with a heavy heart, Brar said the morale of delegates and workers—who had worked tirelessly across Punjab, including the Malwa region—had been badly affected due to what he termed the leadership’s inaction.
He revealed that he had withdrawn from active work and remained at home since October 13, 2025, but stated that the situation had now compelled him to step down.
Quoting a line from Gurbani—“No one is good, no one is bad”—Brar said he did not wish to criticise anyone. However, he expressed hope that the party leadership would introspect and correct its course. He also informed the media that he would share his detailed perspective in an interview once his health improves.
