World Breaking: Heavy rains trigger devastating floods in New Zealand

Auckland (New Zealand), January 21, 2026:Severe flooding caused by torrential rainfall has wreaked havoc across New Zealand’s North Island, as a powerful tropical storm continues to batter the region. Authorities have issued Red Warnings in several areas, urging residents to remain alert and follow safety advisories.
A tragic incident was reported near the Mahurangi River, north of Auckland, where a vehicle was swept away by strong floodwaters while attempting to cross the river. While one passenger managed to escape safely, the driver remains missing. Due to adverse weather conditions, police were forced to suspend search operations for the day.
Local Emergencies Declared
In view of the worsening situation, local states of emergency have been declared in several regions, including:
- Northland
- Coromandel
- Tairāwhiti
- Bay of Plenty
- Hauraki
Residents in these areas have been advised to move to safer locations and strictly follow instructions issued by emergency services.
Heavy Rainfall Warning Issued
Meteorologists have warned that the affected regions could receive rainfall equivalent to an entire month within the next 2–3 days. In some places, rainfall could reach up to 250 millimetres, further increasing the risk of flooding and landslides.
Emergency services remain on high alert as authorities closely monitor the evolving situation.
