Kila Raipur (Ludhiana), February 18, 2026: The second day of the iconic Kila Raipur Rural Olympics witnessed an unprecedented surge of enthusiasm, with thousands of spectators—particularly youth—converging at the historic stadium to celebrate Punjab’s rich rural sporting heritage.
The highlight of the day was the much-anticipated revival of traditional bullock cart races, returning after a 12-year hiatus. The thunderous spectacle captivated the audience, drawing roaring cheers from the packed stands and marking a historic moment in the legacy of the Rural Olympics.

In addition to the bullock cart races, the event showcased a vibrant array of competitions including hockey matches, kabaddi bouts, shot put throws, 100-metre sprints, tug of war contests, long jump events and the much-admired Bazigar show. Families, farmers, youth groups and visitors from across Punjab and beyond filled the venue, creating an electric atmosphere of celebration and unity.
Addressing the gathering, Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan described the revival of bullock cart races as a historic milestone achieved through legislative reforms and animal welfare safeguards under the Punjab Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Punjab Amendment) Act, 2025. He stated that the return of this iconic rural sport not only preserves Punjab’s cultural identity but also rekindles enthusiasm among the younger generation for traditional games.
Sandhwan expressed optimism that such initiatives would motivate youth to reconnect with playgrounds, steering them away from drug abuse and excessive mobile usage. He emphasised that these games carry deep emotional significance and play a vital role in safeguarding Punjab’s heritage.
Earlier, State Media Head Baltej Singh Pannu commended the organisers and the overwhelming turnout of spectators. He noted that under the leadership and vision of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the government successfully addressed past challenges to revive the historic event with necessary safeguards, restoring the glory of the Rural Olympics.
Prominent among those present were Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain, Additional Deputy Commissioner Amarjit Bains, SDMs Jasleen Kaur Bhullar and Upinderjit Kaur Brar, Assistant Commissioner Dr Pragati, District Sports Officer Kuldeep Chugh and other officials.
