Chandigarh, March 6, 2026: The Budget Session of the Punjab Legislative Assembly began on Friday with the Governor addressing the House and highlighting the achievements of the state government over the past four years. However, the session witnessed disruption as opposition members allegedly interrupted the Governor’s speech, leading to sharp criticism from leaders of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that while the Governor was informing the people of the state about the work done by the Bhagwant Mann-led government, opposition parties created disturbances during the address and undermined the dignity of the House.
He added that the people of Punjab are closely watching the behaviour of the opposition and will hold them accountable.
“The Governor was listing the achievements of the government during the past four years, which the opposition Congress could not tolerate. They have no real issues to raise in the Assembly and could not accept seeing representatives from ordinary families sitting in the House, which is why they chose to boycott the proceedings,” said Harbhajan Singh, Cabinet Minister in the Punjab government.
Reacting to the opposition’s boycott on the first day of the Budget Session, AAP Punjab President and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora also criticised the move. He alleged that the Congress-led opposition tried to divert the government’s attention from public issues by creating a ruckus during the Governor’s address.
Arora said that the next ten days of the Assembly session are meant for discussions on important issues concerning Punjab, but the opposition turned the House into a “fish market” without even listening to the Governor’s speech. He added that such conduct was inappropriate for elected representatives and called on the opposition to act responsibly.
