Chandigarh, March 14, 2026: Former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa on Saturday strongly criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his recent statement that nearly 45 per cent of India’s heroin enters the country through Punjab, calling it an admission of failure and demanding his resignation.
In a statement issued in Chandigarh, Randhawa said that if such a large quantity of narcotics is indeed entering India through Punjab, it reflects poorly on the functioning of the Union Home Ministry. He argued that border security falls under the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force (BSF), which operates under the control of the central government.
Randhawa alleged that the 50-kilometre stretch of Punjab’s international border, from where drugs are reportedly being smuggled through drones, is monitored by the BSF.
He claimed that under the current leadership of the Home Ministry, the border with Pakistan has effectively become porous, allowing narcotics and weapons to be dropped into Indian territory.
The Congress leader further alleged that drones are not only delivering narcotics but also weapons such as AK-47 rifles and pistols, which are later used by criminal gangs in violent crimes. According to him, the growing insecurity along the border and the resulting law-and-order issues in Punjab are directly linked to failures in border management.
Randhawa also criticised the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab, accusing it of failing to curb drug trafficking and rising gangster activity in the state. He said incidents of extortion, violence and robberies indicate that law and order is deteriorating.
He added that both the state government and the central government share responsibility for the situation in Punjab, urging them to take stronger measures to address the drug menace and restore security in the state.
