Punjab farmers announce rail blockage on April 17 over wheat procurement

Chandigarh, April 15, 2026: Farmer organisations across Punjab have called for a statewide rail blockade on April 17, demanding the immediate start of wheat procurement and relaxation of existing norms.
The decision was jointly taken by groups associated with the Samyukt Kisan Morcha and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (Punjab chapter), with support also coming from the Azad Kisan Morcha.
As per the announcement, trains will be halted from 12 noon to 3 pm if procurement does not begin without delay.
Farmer leaders said the move comes amid heavy crop losses caused by recent unseasonal rains and hailstorms, which have damaged wheat quality and left produce lying unsold in mandis. They alleged that farmers are being forced to sell at reduced prices due to procurement delays.
The organisations also flagged issues such as shortage of gunny bags and lack of basic facilities like shade and washrooms at procurement centres. Warning of intensified protests, they said further action will follow if their demands are not addressed.
Farm leaders have appealed for public support, stating that the protest is aimed at safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods and ensuring fair procurement practices.
