Tarn Taran, Punjab, April 22, 2026: An alleged assault on a former soldier and his family in Sabra village of Tarn Taran district has sparked controversy, with the victim accusing local police of inaction, even as the opposing side has denied all charges and levelled counter-allegations.
According to the complainant, ex-serviceman Mahinder Singh, he was attacked on April 12 on his farmland by Sarabjit Singh, also known as Sonu, along with several others. Singh claimed that he sustained serious injuries during the incident, including a fractured arm, and was later admitted to Civil Hospital Ghariala. His wife, Jaswinder Kaur, and elderly grandmother, Jagir Kaur, were also allegedly assaulted.
The family has further alleged that personnel from the Punjab Police present at the scene failed to intervene or take immediate action against the accused. They claim that despite medical reports being submitted to the Sabra police station, no case has been registered so far, forcing them to seek justice through higher authorities.
Mahinder Singh and his family have now approached the Director General of Police, Punjab, and the Senior Superintendent of Police, Tarn Taran, questioning the lack of action and urging authorities to ensure justice. They have also appealed to ex-servicemen’s organisations for support.
The victim alleged that video evidence of the assault exists and accused the opposing party of fabricating counter-injury claims to weaken his case. He has also demanded a medical review of the alleged injuries of the other side.
However, the matter has taken a complex turn with conflicting narratives emerging from within the family itself. Ranjit Kaur, identified as Mahinder Singh’s mother, publicly refuted his claims, alleging that her son is attempting to falsely implicate Sarabjit Singh due to a land dispute.
Sarabjit Singh also denied all allegations, stating that he had legally purchased land from Mahinder Singh’s brother and accused the ex-serviceman of trying to frame him out of personal enmity.
Meanwhile, an official from the Sabra police station acknowledged receiving medical reports from both parties and stated that action would be taken based on due procedure.
The officer also indicated that there had been local pressure and threats, which may have contributed to delays in initiating formal proceedings. He confirmed that allegations regarding the incident occurring in the presence of police are being looked into.
