Chandigarh, February 26,2015: Asserting that the recently concluded elections to various municipal councils in Punjab had been brutally manipulated by the Akalis, Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, Capt Amarinder Singh today said that at the same time, these should sound a note of caution for the Congress as people had voted for independent candidates at a number of places where they could otherwise have voted for the party (Congress) against the Akalis or the BJP. Reacting to the results, he observed that given the Akalis’ way of misusing power and official machinery, the local bodies’ elections as also the by-elections are mostly won by them whenever they are in power. However, he added, the way a large number of independent candidates won in these elections is a clear signal that the Congress cannot afford any complacency in the hope that it can ride to power merely on anti-incumbency against the ruling alliance, but needs to work much harder from right now only. Capt Amarinder said that there was no doubt that people were very angry and unhappy with the ruling Akali-BJP alliance. Despite the pressure from the ruling alliance people at several places did express their anger by voting against the alliance candidates. “But instead of voting for the Congress as the principal opposition party, they voted for the independents in a substantially large number of placesâ€, he pointed out, which he said should make the Congress party sit down and introspect as why it has not been able to capitalise on the anti-incumbency against the Akalis. The former Chief Minister maintained that the Congress cannot afford to concede the opposition space to any third player. “These elections must serve us as a note of caution and we must put our house in order so that people choose Congress as the only alternative to the Akali-BJP allianceâ€, he said, while adding, “the sooner we realise it and act, the better it would be for the partyâ€.
