# People expected a new ray of hope from The Tribune group
# Modi’s political opponents and Congress leaders were delighted
Chandigarh , June 9,2015 :It was the evening of June 7, I answered my phone and a familiar voice responded, “This is Dalbir Singh speaking.†Although I was hearing the voice after a long time but I recognized that he was Dalbir Singh of Village Ganna Pind and a former senior reporter of ‘The Tribune’. After sharing pleasantries, he said: “I read your article ‘Live & Let Live’ on the issue of the posters of Bhindrawale and the relating incidents. He continued on to say that even Pandit Nehru could not succeed in his ‘Panchsheel Movement’ but he is uncertain as to whether anybody would listen to Balli’s words of wisdom. Dalbir Singh then shared his observations on the current political situation as a radical Sikh intellectual quoting some historical examples. He further added that all was going on as per previous traditions, although he had noticed something strange; the article written by Harish Khare, the new Editor-in-Chief of The Tribune in its 5th June edition. He said it was pleasantly surprising; appreciating Harish Khare writing such a hard hitting article, Dalbir Singh said that it has not been the tradition of the Tribune to take such anti-establishment position. He was referring to the article titled "No room for an Emperor†published on June 5, 2015. I believe this was the first article written by Harish Khare after he took over as Editor-in-Chief of the Tribune on June 1, 2015. Dalbir Singh further said that if the Editor Harish Khare would be leading The Tribune with such a professional approach then it can bring a new ray of hope for the region. Dalbir Singh is one of the few Sikh intellectuals who had been very close to Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale and also always pleaded and endorsed his ideology and actions as well . Though my moderate thinking and writings do not match in any way to Dalbir's aggressive and radical approach and writings but still I respect him and we talk to each other periodically. He never looked back after resigning from The Tribune. He said that he wanted to congratulate Harish Khare but he could not do so due to non-availability of his contact number or email address. Dalbir Singh's reaction indicates that even the radical Sikh circles have also taken note of the article published by Harish Khare. Even before Dalbir’s phone call, the Editor of a newspaper in the city also mentioned the article written by Harish Khare during a long chat we had in his office. The editor pointed that Khare's article reflected a bold writing not so common in Tribune. This article by Harish Khare, in fact, remained a topic of hot discussion in regional media and also in political circles sinc its publication. The Modi’s political opponents, specially the congressmen seemed very happy. Several readers of The Tribune, including congress leader Bir Devinder Singh, commented in ‘Letter to Editor’ column on this article, which speaks to its credibility. One can guess The Tribune may also have got a huge number of letters and e-mails commenting on Khare’s article. I also read this article. Punjabi Tribune also published its translated version in Punjabi .But it was not a very good translation. We could find only literal meaning in Punjabi in some portions of the article and not the real meaning and spirit of the author’s thoughts in Punjabi Tribune. The article by Khare was bound to be a topic of discussion in different circles as he had given a fearless advice to Modi and BJP leadership on his individualistic style of governance saying that it is did not match with the democratic traditions. The writing of Khare also depicts him as a learned and proficient Journalist but some of his observations may be debatable. He has rightly mentioned that only aggressive publicity cannot show the empty utensils as filled. Khare’s article’s contents also reflect that Modi’s performance is far away from ground reality. But the public opinion about Modi’s performance on diplomatic front and some other fields is seen divided. In all, Khare’s words of advice and warning to BJP are certainly appreciable. After reading the article, I also wanted to complement Khare but I had no contact number or his e-mail address. As per as the policy of the Tribune as well as its outlook is concerned, Harish Khare’s impact needs to be analyzed in future. One thing I want to say that despite the criticism of the Tribune Group of newspaper from some quarters about its impartiality, The Tribune Group (especially Punjabi Tribune) is considered as an independent and impartial newspaper publication. During the pre-partition days before 1947, even after independence and also later in divided Punjab after 1966, The Tribune had been an integral part in the history, culture, lifestyle and psyche of people of Punjab and the Northern region. Reading The Tribune used to be a habit of a considerable section of the people of this region for long. Despite an unexpected growth and expansion of print media in the region, The Tribune is still known as an authentic and impartial source of information in a large section of society. If somebody is interested in any type of news information, he cannot ignore tribune whether he likes it or not. As far as I am concerned my association with the Tribune is emotional as well as professional. I started my Journalistic career as a stringer in Punjabi Tribune in 1980 and learnt basics of this profession and news drafting skills from the learned news desk of Punjabi Tribune. Some of my news stories also appeared in The Tribune as translated version. In fact it was my first opportunity to work under the leadership of Barjinder Singh, then Editor of Punjabi Tribune and learnt a lot from his professional competence and editorial guidance. 08-06-2015 Editor, Babushahi.com +91-9915177722 tirshinazar@gmail.com
