Fatehgarh Sahib. May.4, 2021: Amid a surge in COVID Pandemic emergencies, the hospital accommodation is required to host the Covid and non-Covid patients, but the top floor of the Civil Hospital Fatehgarh Sahib building has been occupied by the Civil Surgeon and his staff meant for Operation Theater (OT) and wards to admit the patients.
The State government should immediately intervene and shift the Civil Surgeon’s establishment immediately out of the premises of the Hospital to accommodate the rush of patients, said Bir Devinder Singh former Deputy Speaker, while interacting with the media here today.
He said that he has written a letter to the Secretary of Health in this regard. He said that he was instrumental in establishing the Civil Hospital at Fatehgarh Sahib during his stint as an MLA from Sirhind.
As Fatehgarh Sahib was carved out a new District in 1993, the administrative office of the Civil Surgeon was forcibly housed in the existing building of the Civil Hospital Fatehgarh Sahib.
As such a very large portion of the building of the Hospital, including one operation theater, which is being used as the office of the civil surgeon and the rest of the block of the OT, is under the occupancy of the establishment of the Civil Surgeon, whereas the capacity of this 100 bedded hospital has come down to approximately 50 to 60.
He has urged the government to construct the new building for the Civil Surgeon office and till then it should be shifted to the district administrative complex.
When contacted Dr. Kuldeep Singh Senior Medical Officer (SMO) Civil hospital Fatehgarh Sahib, he said that it is 100 bedded hospital and one block has been occupied by the Civil Surgeon office and staff, so now they have only 70 beds available.
He also suggested that Civil Surgeon Office should be shifted out of the hospital, so that they may utilize 100 beds and OT and other facilities for COVID and non-COVID patients.
Similarly, he has also demanded that the maternity ward of the civil hospital Mandi Gobindgarh should be shifted to a newly constructed MCH (Mother-Child Health) center adjacent to the existing building of the Civil Hospital as the building of the existing hospital is in a very dilapidated condition and a high power team of the health department during their visit to the hospital had declared it unsafe in 2020, but no step has been taken in this regard.
He said, unfortunately, the gynecologists and other hospital staff are still conducting deliveries; under the dilapidated and unsafe roofs of old buildings of the civil hospital, if any mishap occurred, who will be responsible.
He urged the health secretary to ensure that the MCH is put to use, for the purpose it was built at a great cost for the benefit of the mother and the child without further delay.
