Amritsar (Punjab), May 2, 2025: Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj has strongly asserted that, under riparian law, the state of Punjab holds exclusive rights over its river waters.
Addressing growing concerns over water distribution, the Jathedar emphasized that while Punjab bears the brunt of flood-related damage, it is still expected to share its limited water resources with neighboring states.
He highlighted that Punjab already supplies more than its fair share of water and questioned whether the state should be left barren as a result.
“Punjab has no surplus water to give,” he warned, appealing to both the central and state governments for an immediate and just resolution of the issue.
The Jathedar’s remarks underscore rising tensions over water-sharing agreements, which have long been a source of political and social contention in the region.
