Ferozepur Municipal Council launches Weekly Cleanliness Drive
Ferozepur, May 6, 2025: Acting on the directives of the Punjab Government and under the guidance of Local Government Minister Dr. Inderbir Singh Nijjar and Secretary of the Local Government Department, Chandigarh, a significant cleanliness campaign has been launched by the Ferozepur Municipal Council. This initiative follows a strategic meeting addressing key urban issues, including waste collection, sewerage, debris removal, drainage cleaning, street lighting, and road repairs.
Led by Deputy Commissioner Deepashikha Sharma and Additional Deputy Commissioner Dr. Nidhi Kumud, the first phase of this weekly drive commenced from Namdev Chowk to Mallwal Road. A specially constituted team carried out comprehensive cleaning along this stretch, covering approximately 3 km and removing five trolley-loads of debris and garbage.
Executive Officer Poonam Bhatnagar and Superintendent Sukhpal Singh informed that multiple municipal departments participated, including sanitation workers, electricians, gardeners, clerical staff, anti-encroachment teams, and those responsible for streetlight maintenance and debris removal. Machinery such as sweepers, grass-cutting machines, tractors, Tata Ace vehicles, JCBs, and loaders was deployed.
Encroachments, hoardings, and flex boards were removed, and goods from several shopkeepers were seized. Five individuals were fined ₹10,000 each for leaving debris in public spaces. Post-cleaning, water sprinkling was conducted, and fogging was scheduled for the evening.
Assistant Municipal Engineer Lovepreet Singh reported that three stormwater drain covers were replaced, five new streetlights were installed, and several others were repaired. Pothole patchwork is scheduled soon.
The Municipal Council announced that every week, one area will be fully addressed in a single-day drive to resolve all civic issues efficiently. Residents are urged to cooperate for a cleaner, more beautiful city.
DC Deepshikha Sharma praised the dedication of the entire municipal staff and encouraged other councils in Ferozepur district to replicate the initiative. Dr. Nidhi Kumud lauded Ferozepur for being among the first cities in Punjab to implement such a model and called for active public participation.
