Chandigarh, February 18, 2026: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday granted anticipatory bail to Kanchanpreet Kaur in connection with two FIRs, prompting the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) to term the development a “major moral victory” and accuse the state government of political targeting.
The relief was granted in FIR numbers 261 and 240. During the hearing, the state government informed the court that it did not intend to arrest Kanchanpreet Kaur in FIR No. 261. Following submissions by senior advocate Arshdeep Singh Kler and advocate Damanbir Singh Sobti, who appeared on her behalf, the court allowed the plea for anticipatory bail.
With this order, Kanchanpreet Kaur has now secured bail protection in all cases registered against her during the election period.
Reacting to the decision, the Shiromani Akali Dal alleged that the FIRs were filed out of political rivalry. The party claimed that the family was deliberately targeted because Kanchanpreet Kaur’s mother, Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, contested the Tarn Taran by-election as a SAD candidate.
According to the Akali Dal, the government’s statement in court that it did not seek her arrest reflects the weakness of the cases. The party maintained that the High Court’s order exposes what it described as politically motivated action during the electoral process.
