Retreat Ceremony suspended at Hussainiwala Border amid rising tensions
Ferozepur, May 7, 2025: In the wake of heightened security concerns following a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam and India's retaliatory strike under Operation Sandoor, the Border Security Force (BSF) has announced the suspension of the Beating Retreat Ceremony at the Hussainiwala Joint Check Post (JCP).
The decision to scale down ceremonial activities has also affected the daily retreat ceremonies at other Indo-Pak borders in Punjab, including Attari in Amritsar and Sadki in Fazilka. As part of the new security measures, the traditional gate opening and the symbolic handshake between Indian and Pakistani border commanders have also been called off.
The daily lowering of the national flag at sunset will continue, but without the usual public display and protocol-driven gestures that draw hundreds of visitors each evening. The move has left many tourists—both local and from across the country—disappointed, as the ceremony has long been a patriotic attraction and a symbol of disciplined military tradition.
Authorities have indicated that the suspension is temporary and subject to review based on evolving security conditions.
