Chandigarh, May 5, 2025 – The Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Monday passed the Punjab Law Officers Engagement (Amendment) Bill, 2025, aimed at promoting the representation of SC/ST advocates in the state legal system. The Bill was tabled and passed by Finance Minister Harpal Cheema.
The key provision of the Bill is to provide reservations to advocates belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes for engagement as law officers in the state.
A significant amendment introduced in the Bill reduces the income eligibility criteria by half. This change is intended to accelerate the recruitment process for 58 currently vacant law officer posts in Punjab.
The move is seen as a step towards social inclusion and the timely filling of essential legal positions in the state.
